What You Should Know About Cat Allergies

Posted on

Cat allergies and why it is more common than dog allergies.

If you suffer from pet allergies chances are you are more likely to be allergic to the cat than the dog. Why?

Well, it is not the fur on Fluffy that causes you to sneeze and have itchy, runny eyes. It is a protein on the skin of Fluffy that is called Fed d 1.

This protein is about one-tenth of the size of a piece of dust. The protein or dander can remain airborne for hours just floating on a bit of cat hair or skin. Dog dander can’t do that. It drops pretty rapidly to the ground. And the cat dander is just the perfect size to find its way deep into your lungs.

Cat dander is also extremely sticky. It can adhere itself to people’s skin, clothes and hair. It has been found in places where no cats have been such as doctor’s offices, classrooms and even the Arctic.

Here are some options that might help you keep those cat allergies at bay.

Avoid contact with a cat if at all possible, though cat dander can hang around a house or yard for up to six months, making avoidance extremely hard.

Keep the cat out of your bedroom.

Buy a high-efficiency HEPA filter.

We all know how much cats love water, but bathing does help to remove the Fed d 1 protein.

Clean your carpets regularly.

If you can’t avoid cat dander, building up your immune system and tolerance is a great alternative.

The immune system defends us against disease. When harmful substances are detected, such as animal dander, the immune system creates antibodies. The antibodies destroy or neutralize allergens (i.e. mold, animal dander and/or pollens) that are causing your allergic reactions. Allergena is a Homeopathic Sublingual Immunotherapy that reduces your body's negative reaction to allergens. Allergena Pet Dander allergy drops build immunity by giving micro doses of what a person is allergic to so the body becomes safely conditioned to tolerate those allergens and reduce allergic symptoms.

Sublingual: Underneath the tongue.

Immunotherapy: Treatment to stimulate or restore the ability of the immune (defense) system to fight infection and disease. Allergy shots are another form of Immunotherapy.
