Florida and Allergies

Endless Florida Sunshine – a curse or a blessing if you suffer from allergies?

While most of the country is busy naming the next winter storm of the season, people in Florida are enjoying warm, sunny days, palm trees and causing much envy on Social Media with their selfies.

For most people this is blessing but for some it is a curse. Florida’s allergy season is stronger and longer than any other state, with different allergen-producing grasses and trees peaking earlier and at different times of the year.

In the North and Midwest freezing temperatures keep the grasses and trees dormant so that the pollen count is almost non-existent. Not so in Florida – where everything is perpetually blooming. For those who suffer pollen allergies it is a never ending battle of runny noses, itchy eyes and sneezing.

Which grasses and trees produce pollen and when do they bloom?

Oak and pine trees start pollinating in December while other varieties don’t until April or May. April to October is a busy time for the grass pollen. Ragweed and dog fennel come into play May through December while sorrel and dock, a minor weed, produce their pollen May through December. Unfortunately, that doesn’t leave allergy suffers much time without a tissue in their hand.

But that doesn’t mean people who suffer from allergies need to take all their selfies from indoors and miss all the fun in the sun.

How do you combat your allergies?

  • Get tested so that you know exactly which pollens effect you.
  • Keep track of the pollen count so that you know which days to stay inside.
  • Start taking an immune booster before your allergies are at their worse.
  • Enjoy outdoor activities after it rains or in the evenings, when pollen counts are normally lower.
  • Don’t hang clothes outside to dry.
  • Use a Hepa Filter with your air condition unit.
  • Shower after you’ve been outside for extended periods of time.
  • Leave your shoes at the door!

With the proper precautions and correct allergy treatment, you can enjoy all that sunny Florida has to offer. It may not be something you consider often but the geography of your home can greatly affect your health.
